Studio Three x Rugsea

The Sunday Jazz Collection is Studio Three’s debut rug series, created in collaboration with local rugmakers Rugsea.

Inspired by the improvisational spirit of jazz and the intentionality of design, this collection explores the quiet parallels between the two structure, rhythm, and emotion.

Visually, the rugs draw from the bold, expressive color palettes of classic 1960s jazz album covers, reinterpreted through a contemporary design lens.

The collection captures the bittersweet mood of a Sunday: a gentle tension between slowing down and gearing up. It’s about the melancholy of stillness, the lingering notes of rest, and the quiet stirrings of creative anticipation for the week ahead.

Each piece is designed to bring that same duality into a space, offering calm, yet alive with movement and energy through thoughtful composition and rich color.

Collaboration was at the heart of bringing The Sunday Jazz Collection to life.We believed the soul of the rugs could only be fully expressed through film — to capture not just the design, but the mood. So Studio Three teamed up with METAKAJI to translate that vision into a series of four short films, each crafted to reflect the ideal atmosphere for the collection.

To set the tone, we filmed at MOONKITAA’s stunning postmodern colonial bungalow — a space whose retro interior beautifully complements the jazz-inspired essence of the collection. The result is a visual narrative that feels as warm and timeless as the rugs themselves.

DESIGN PROCESS

The design exploration for the rug collection began by drawing parallels between design principles and the essence of jazz, finding shared values like rhythm, repetition, harmony, and even moments of tension. From there, we developed a unique visual language and pattern, taking cues from classic vintage jazz album covers. This inspired an eccentric yet curated selection of colours, balanced with a contemporary aesthetic. The retro influence is subtle, but the energy is unmistakably present.

This collaboration considers rugs as cultural recordings, or artifacts of a specific time and place, in the same way that spreadsheets or a weathered journal entry might convey meaning and cultural context within each individual page.

FROM ATAP

There was something personal and quietly familiar about being part of this campaign. Like Kash, jazz has long shaped the way I think. It is layered, fluid, and rooted in shared experience. The process of setting each scene with friends, textures, and light unfolded naturally. Rugs laid, moments lived, everything found its place with ease. There was no clear beginning or end. Just something to feel. The Sunday Jazz Collection moved with that same rhythm. The rhythm of calmness in the chaos.Grateful to the team behind the shoot whose care and craft made each frame feel effortless.
